Involved in another Martial Art?

Student's Training at Perth Wing Chun

We're proud to be part of the thriving Martial Art Community within Perth . and we have full respect for a great number of styles and have many friends outside of our Academy. Mutual respect and admiration is something we like to advocate at our Club. Not only do we regularly give back to the community (see Movember section, if even for a laugh) we value the talent and ability of individuals who are already proficient in another system.

So we're interested to know what has brought you to Perth Wing Chun. Is it that you wish to cross-train with another style? Maybe your style has too much focus on Sports Fighting? Perhaps you want to become more skilful with your hands? You may feel you've done your dash with your particular style? Whatever the reason we hope to cover some of your questions here before you come in and have a closer look.

1. You're wanting to Cross-Train at another school?

At Perth Wing Chun we are open to allowing other styles to come in and cross-train. If you are proficient in another style we may make an exception for you and allow you to train in one of our Sparring or Advanced Classes (usually only for students over Level 3.) Please be aware that we will not accept "challenge matches" or engage in separate training if it interferes with general class structures. Not only is this distracting for all the Students trying to learn, it also takes away from the Instructor if they have to take you outside to show you why our system works.

2. Is Self-Defense something you've been neglecting?

Many styles of Martial Arts will focus primarily on Sports Fighting. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this approach, it tends to give a distorted view of what will work in reality and what works in the 'ring' or on the 'matt'. The illusion of rules often gives us a false sense of security which is why I believe you should invest time into focusing on Self Defense. At Perth Wing Chun we will give you a great foundation with simple concepts that you will be able to incorporate into your own system. Our Instructors will be more than happy to take you through some simple principles and ensure you up your self defense. We recommend attending the "Beginners Classes" to begin with. This will help you learn the basics and help you ease into learning something completely brand new (refer here for timetable) You're also welcome to attend the "All Levels Classes" however just be aware they may be slightly more challenging at first but if you keep coming to class you will get there in no time!

3. Are you wanting to become more skilful with your hands?

There is a huge focus on touch reflexes (Chi Sao, refer here for more info) and fighting from "hand to hand" contact at Perth Wing Chun. Whilst we do teach a variety of skill-sets Chi Sao is most definitely one of the most well known and popular forms of training Wing Chun.

If you train at Perth Wing Chun we will ensure your reflexes will improve, your double arm co-ordination will go through the roof and you'll be learning sequences which will roll over to other areas in your life. Students who have been training in Wing Chun for a number of months will often bring up situations where they've grabbed items before they've hit the ground, and that they react much more quicker whilst driving, or whilst playing sport. This is just a natural side-effect from training and we look forward to hearing your stories a few months after you've commenced with us!

4. You'll be learning a traditional martial art

Respect, Discipline, goal setting and determination are just a few of the qualities you will gain by learning Traditional Wing Chun. We are proud to be part of a system which is over 300 years old with such a vast array of master who have come before us (check out the History section for more info).

5. You want to learn something new

They say change is as good as a holiday and perhaps you've had enough of the current style of martial arts you're involved in. Maybe it's become too expensive, or the Instructors don't really care about your progress. You may have even stagnated and require something else to freshen up your approach to Martial Arts.

Well the great news is that Perth Wing Chun is a dynamic, multi-faceted and fast-moving Academy within the Perth Community! Not only do we have a vast around of Academies within Perth, we also have a perfect balance of Instructors, Assistant Instructors, and Aspiring Instructors pushing up through the ranks.
